Nov. 15, 1916 – Cartoonist/animator Bill Melendez was born Jose Cuauhtemoc Melendez in Hermosillo, Mexico. Best known for his work on many Peanuts TV specials, he started his career at the Disney Studio in 1937, drawing for “Fantasia,” “Pinocchio,” “Bambi,” and “Dumbo.”
Nov. 15, 1924 – Disney’s Alice Comedy “Alice Hunting in Africa” was released.
Nov. 15, 1929 – Disney’s Mickey Mouse cartoon “Jungle Rhythm” was released.
Nov. 15, 1932 – The Disney Art Class met for the 1st time with Don Graham of the Chouinard School of Art lecturing at Disney’s old sound studio. In preparation for a feature-length cartoon, Walt Disney has setup this art school to train animators.
Nov. 15, 1934 – Alice Pleasance Liddell, the inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” died.
Nov. 15, 1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club aired the episode “Today is Guest Star Day” on ABC-TV.
Nov. 15, 1964 – The Disney TV show aired “Ben and Me/Peter and the Wolf.”
Nov. 15, 1965 – Walt and Roy Disney, accompanied by Governor Haydon Burns, spoke to the press at the Cherry Plaza Hotel in Orlando and officially launched the Walt Disney World project in Florida. (Site preparation will begin in the fall of 1967 and the park will open in October 1971, unfortunately 5 years after Walt’s death.) Only days after this announcement, the price of land surrounding the property that the Disney organization purchased would shot up to an amazing $80,000 per acre.
Nov. 15, 1975 – Floyd Gottfredson’s last Mickey Mouse comic strip was published. (A 45-year veteran, Floyd had retired on Oct. 1, 1975.)
Nov. 15, 1980 – The attraction “Big Thunder Mountain Railroad” opened in Frontierland at the Magic Kingdom in WDW.
