Sprint stock may be down to $3.76, but I'm lovin' the gas prices. Last night I paid $2.67.

Wondering how if other areas are seeing gas prices dropping???

I am, yeah. Ours aren't as low as yours, but I gassed up the other day for $3.11 and that's the lowest I've paid in recent memory.

The free market works ... demand goes down, price goes down.

Some areas in West Tennessee are $3.17. Ours was still running $3.49 til I turned them in for price gouging. :number1: By afternoon it was $3.28.

Areas in Southeast Missouri (I'm right on the border) are $2.95, and clerks say it will go lower this weekend. WHOOHOOOOO!

I've also noticed some of our food prices are going back to normal - last week I paid nearly $2 a pound for Granny Smith apples - this week they were 99 cents.

hmm I think I might need to move to Missouri and get your cheap gas lol

Ours in the Chicago area is still around $3.55 but it has been going down a few cents each day 2 weeks ago it was $3.90 so it is a great drop for us but I'd still like to see it cheaper.

The stocks are down, retirement is a few years later but Marker is so right we are driving for a lot less:D.

We are paying $3.19 this morning or a dollar less than the peak just a few months ago:woohoo:. Hopefully OPEC doesn't cut the output to much on Monday to drive prices back up.

I was pleasantly surprised to pay $3.29 the other day. Wonder if everything will follow suit. I wonder if our heating bills will be lower this year? Does not seem the gas company has lowered their prices any according to my last bill. We'll see.

Gas in my area is hovering just above $3, with diesel at about $3.50. But I'd much rather have those tens of thousands of dollars back in my 401(k).

LauraF

It's much lower here too. However I filled up on the wrong end of it.

Monday morning - I filled my car @ $3.39 on the way to work. By the time I got home the same station was at $3.11. It was $2.99 this morning. I'm a long distance commuter - my gas bills for the month have dropped by nearly$100 due to these incremental reductions. This is great! :D

Just think ... all this money we're saving on gas now can be pumped back into other areas of the economy.

Spend those gas savings!!

FYI oil is all the way down to like $77 a barrel. That's just about half what its peak was a few months ago.

I drove past a gas station here in Northern NJ this morning and my jaw dropped - it was $2.89 a gallon!! (that might be a cash price though, which is always a little lower than credit/debit). I was shocked though...

The cheapest price I saw today here was $3.16. Like said before, that is the lowest I have seen it in recent memory. Huntsville hit $2.98 yesterday and I couldn't believe my ears. :jaw:

I am staying home more and combining my errands at one time. I filled up the day before the hurricane hit when everyone was panicking and didn't fill up again until yesterday. Just doing this has cut our gas expenses in half, especially when DH has to gas up almost every 3 days with his truck driving back and forth to work.

It's dropping here as well - my son filled up at Sam's Club in Orlando for $3.32/gallon.
There was one place selling the other day for $2.88/gallon  Needless to say there were cars lined up, the pumps ran dry, fights broke out
It takes me back to the 70's gas crisis.

I filled up in Maynard Wednesday at $3.19 and thought that was good. By this morning the same station was down to $3.09. The one up the road from it was still at $3.39 though. One of the ladies I work with got it up in her area for $3.06 earlier in the week so it may be lower by now.
On the other hand my 401k has dropped significantly in the last week! Our rep for the 401k company has been sending us mailings about what to do and not to do (don't sell out!). They showed stats on a typical Bear market and what usually happens afterwards. I'm hoping there will be something left by the time I retire.

SAHDad

We're still in the $3.15-$3.30 range, depending on the station. Fortunately, I'm road-tripping tomorrow, and can take advantage (hopefully) of some $3.03 gas at my destination.

We're still hovering around $3.50/gallon here. But, that's significantly better than the $3.89 I was paying a couple of weeks ago...

Gas might be cheaper, but food isn't...

I'm also in Milwaukee, and the lowest I have seen is $2.99. $2.99 is the cheapest I have ever paid for gas, so it's GREAT to see it that low!! (I've had my own car since March).

If only prices would stay this low (and $2.99 isn't even that low!)....

Although it's not that low prices have finally started to drop below $3.50 around here for the first time in a very long time!!! We are pretty happy! Gas is around $3.45 which is still expensive compared to all our border states  but its still cheaper then it has been!

I paid $2.89 to fuel up my Suburban today. Only had to put $77 in to fill it. Six months ago it was $80 for a half a tank...

Now OPEC has been asked to cut production because Oil fell again this week. Come on... the economy is just spinning down.

pixiesmimi

The prices may go back up some but the gas companies have admitted that they inflated the prices, which we all knew, so maybe the government will make them keep the prices down now. There are so many enities that have caused all this financial mess that it is pitiful.

Gas is at $1.69 per gallon in Wayne, NJ. Yippee!

One good thing I got in the habit of doing, was when gas was so high I always filled up when my tank was 1/2 full. I'm still doing that! I go through about 1/2 a tank a week in my Suburban. $34.00 this week to fill up, which still would only be around $70 for a full tank~a much welcome relief from $130 it had been! Amen and Hallajuah!

I'm beginning to love my big SUV again. It's sad to say that I was so excited when I could fill it up for less than $50. Not much less, but it's better than the $90 it cost to fill it not that long ago.

When I came home yesterday, I think the price of gas at our closest independent gas station was $1.84. We live about 15 min south of VA and I've been "told" their prices are as low as $1.57. Either way, I'm somewhat happy now, but can be happier...(hint, hint gas companies).

We were at $1.81 yesterday, I think. But right up the road it was $1.65 Saturday. Don't know why we are always higher than they are. Does this confirm in everyone's mind that the oil guys were really over charging for their own benefit? It solidifies it in my mind. Prices wouldn't have come down so fast if they weren't.:mad:Ummm ... no?

There are quite obvious reasons why prices have come down and none of them have anything to do with "the oil guys" (whoever they are). I mean in case you haven't noticed, there is a massive global economic crisis going on??

Basically, there are two things in a free market that dictate price. Those are supply and demand. If supply and demand are high, prices are moderate. If supply and demand are low, prices are moderate. If supply is high and demand is low, prices are low. If supply is low and demand is high, prices are high.

Oil prices went up because supply was very low and demand was very high. Now demand is way down (and anticipated to drop even further) and supply has stabilized. That's why oil prices have come down. "The oil guys" had nothing to do with it.

In fact, the way oil prices have moved actually proves the opposite ... it's a true free market and functions appropriately.

Ah, but oil prices aren't truly free market as there are external forces (OPEC) which will keep the price from dropping much further. OPEC (as well as Russian oil suppliers for companies like Lukoil) are already talking about controlling oil supply to raise up the price of oil.

Although in reality, even that is just an example of someone manipulating the laws of supply and demand. They artificially contract supply to keep prices up.

But anyway, you are right. If OPEC is "the oil guys" then the market is somewhat manipulated and artificial.

Gas prices peaked around here at around $4.50 a gallon. I filled up for $1.79. That's a drop of around 61%.

When this thread started we were at $3.00 a gallon and I was very excited to be at that. Today I filled up at $1.73/gal. Prices dropping by almost 60% from the $4+ highs this summer is awesome:thumbsup:.

On another positive note, my gas & electric bill which came just last week was $173 (same month last year was $260). In the five years we've been in our house this was our cheapest.

Since the oil companies don't set the price per barrel I find this hard to believe. With the price per barrel almost doubling on the commodity markets the cost per gallon went up. When a price on a gallon of gas doubles the profit doubles even though the mark up remains constant. The main reason the oil companies saw such huge profits over the past two years is in part because of this. With the current low gas prices I'll be curious to see how the oil companies profits compare this quarter.

Don't get me wrong, as an average income family there is nothing worse than stuggling to keep gas in a vehicle at $4+ a gallon while continually hearing the oil companies reporting record profits.

I'm really sorry that you took offense, but what you stated wasn't an opinion. You stated it as fact and we asked where you heard it, because if that happened, everyone should know about it.

About the prices, a lot of places around here started charging extra to pay with credit card. I think that is terrible. I don't really know anyone who carries cash anymore. I think that is a bit of price gauging. We are still in the $2 range in the city.

I guess you are right, if that had been the case, the media would have picked up on it quickly. Sorry that I repeated it. Just thought it was interesting that it was reported and I'm of the same opinion myself.
