Sept. 5, 1911 – Walt Disney began attending Benton Grammer School located at 3004 Benton Blvd. in Kansas City, Missouri. He would continue his education there until he graduated from the 7th grade in 1917.
Sept. 5, 1912 – Animator Frank Thomas, one of Walt’s “Nine Old Men,” who worked on the Disney classics, “The Fox and the Hound,” “Robin Hood,” and “The Jungle Book,” was born in Santa Monica, Ca.
Sept. 5, 1927 – The 1st Oswald the Lucky Rabbit cartoon “Trolley Troubles,” created by Walt Disney and Ubi Iwerks, was released.
Sept. 5, 1929 – Comedian-actor Bob Newhart, the voice of Bernard the Mouse in Disney’s 1990 release “The Rescuers Down Under,” was born in Oak Park, Il.
Sept. 5, 1930 – Disney’s black & white Mickey Mouse cartoon “Chain Gang” was released. It featured the 1st appearance of Pluto. (Though he is not yet named.)
Sept. 5, 1951 – Actor Michael Keaton was born in Corapolis, Pa. His Disney Credits include the 2005 live-action feature “Herbie: Fully Loaded” and the 1982 TV special “Kraft Salutes Walt Disney World’s 10th Anniversary.” Keaton is also the voice of Chick Hicks for the 2006 “Cars.”
Sept. 5, 1956 – Canadian born Mouseketeer Darlene Gillespie became a U.S. citizen.
Sept. 5, 1964 – Walt Disney visited Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark. The European theme park has greatly influenced Walt’s Anaheim park.
Sept. 5, 1966 – Disneyland’s “Flying Saucers” attraction closed after only 5 years of operation.
Sept. 5, 1974 – The “Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue” began performing in Pioneer Hall at Fort Wilderness in WDW.
