Aug. 9, 1899 – Writer P.L. Travers, the author of “Mary Poppins” was born.
Aug. 9, 1919 – “Zorro” first appeared in an edition of the magazine “All Story Weekly.” It was created by Johnstom McCulley, a former police reporter and the author of pulp fiction stories. (In the late 1950’s, Disney would turn it into a TV series.)
Aug. 9, 1934 – Walt Disney gave his animators an outline of what would be his 1st full-length animated film, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” and also provided a list of potential names for the dwarfs.
Aug. 9, 1940 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Donald’s Vacation” was released.
Aug. 9, 1946 – Disney’s Donald Duck cartoon “Wet Paint,” featuring the voice of Clarence Nash, and written by Roy Williams who would appear on “The Mickey Mouse Club” as Roy the Big Mouseketeer, was released.
Aug. 9, 1955 – The “Aunt Jemima Pancake House” Restaurant opened in Disneyland’s Frontierland. (Closed Jan. 1962)
Aug. 9, 1968 – Actor Eric Bana, the voice of Anchor in the 2003 “Finding Nemo,” was born in Australia.
Aug. 9, 1969 – The “Haunted Mansion” attraction opened in New Orleans Square at Disneyland. The grand opening of the attraction was heralded by a promotional blitz that included the “I Scream” sundaes sold at Disneyland’s Carnation Plaza.
Aug. 9, 1985 – The Disney film “My Science Project” was released.
Aug. 9, 1996 – Disney’s feature film “Jack,” starring Robin Williams, Diane Lane, Jennifer Lopez, Brian Kerwin, Fran Drescher, and Bill Cosby, was released.
