Aug. 7, 1861 – Robert Disney, Walt’s uncle, was born in Canada.
Aug. 7, 1926 – Stan Freberg, the voice of the Beaver in Disney’s 1995 classic “Lady and the Tramp,” was born in Los Angeles, Ca.
Aug. 7, 1928 – The second Mickey Mouse film “Gallopin’ Gaucho” was completed.
Aug. 7, 1946 – The Pluto commercial made for the film “A Feather in His Collar” was delivered to the Community Chests of America.
Aug. 7, 1955 – Comedic actor Wayne Knight, the voice of many Disney animated characters including Al McWhiggin in “Toy Story,” and Tantor in “Tarzan,” was born in Cartersville, Ga.
Aug. 7, 1964 – The “AstoJets” at Disneyland’s Tomorrowland were renamed to “Tomorrowland Jets.”
Aug. 7, 1969 – The Haunted Mansion in Disneyland opened to cast members only from 7:00pm to midnight. The new attraction will open to the public 2 days later. (This attraction’s beginnings can be traced back to the mid-1950’s when Walt Disney had artist Ken Anderson work on a walk-through “ghost-house.”)
Aug. 7, 1974 – Disney’s film “The Castaway Cowboy” was released.
Aug. 7, 1988 – Academy Award-winning director and Disney veteran Wilfred Jackson passed away in Balboa Island, Ca. He first started his career in April 1928 as an unpaid helper at the Walt Disney Studios. During his 33-year career, Jackson worked on early Mickey shorts, the Silly Symphony cartoons, and features such as “Snow White,” “Song of the South,” and “Peter Pan.” Retired since October 1961, he was honored in 1983 by Hollywood’s International Animated Film Society with its Winsor McCay Lifetime Achievement Award. Jackson would be named a Disney Legend in 1998.
Aug. 7, 1989 – Disney’s Educational film “Ships,” from the Goofy’s Field Trip series was released.
