Aug. 4, 1875 – Writer Hans Christian Anderson, known for his many classic fairytales including “The Little Mermaid,” died in Rolighed, Denmark.
Aug. 4, 1901 – Jazz Trumpeter Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Although Armstrong himself often cited his birthday as July 4, his baptismal records show that he was born Aug. 4. In the mid 1960’s he recorded an album of Disney music and appeared on Disney related TV shows.
Aug. 4, 1941 – A letter of agreement was signed between the Walt Disney Company and the National Film Board of Canada. The Walt Disney Studios would make movies for the Government of Canada such as a series of films for the War Savings Committee and an anti-tank gun training film for the Canadian military titles “Stop That Tank.”
Aug. 4, 1985 – Disneyland welcomed its 250,000,000th guest.
Aug. 4, 1989 – Disney illustrator Paul Murray passed away. During his career, Murray drew thousands of pages of comics and was one of the very few artists who could essentially draw all of the Disney characters.
Aug. 4, 1991 – Screenwriter/artist and Disney Legend Don DaGradi passed away in Friday Harbor, Washington. A self-confessed “misplaced cartoonist,” Dagradi wrote for animated shorts, served as art director for “Dumbo,” and production designer for “Sleeping Beauty.”
Aug. 4, 1992 – Identical twins Dylan and Cole Sprouse were born in Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy. They will star in Disney Channel’s original series “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody.”
Aug. 4, 1995 – Ground was broken for Disney’s newest theme park at WDW, Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Aug. 4, 1997 – Disney’s Syndicated Late-Night Talk Show “The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show” began airing.
