July 20, 1890 – Verna Felton, the voice if the Fairy Godmother in Disney’s “Cinderella”; and the Queen of Hearts in “Alice in Wonderland”, was born in Salinas, Ca.
July 20, 1923 – Journalist-turned publicist and Disney Legend Charlie Ridgeway was born in Chicago, Il. He would help promote more than 150 major press events for Disney theme parks.
July 20, 1932 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “Flowers and Trees” was released.
July 20, 1941 – The Walt Disney compilation feature “The Reluctant Dragon” was released.
July 20, 1945 – Visual effects supervisor and matte artist Harrison Ellenshaw was born in Harrisburg, Pa. Son of legendary Disney matte painter Peter Ellenshaw, Harrison’s Disney credits include “No Deposit, No Return,” “Gus,” “The Shaggy D.A..” “Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo,” “Pete’s Dragon,” and “Captain EO.”
July 20, 1955 – The “Tomorrowland Boats” (later called the “Phanthom Boats”) opened in Disneyland.
July 20, 1969 – The historic Apollo 11 moon landing was televised on Disneyland’s Tomorrowland Stage. Neil Armstrong (who in July 2005 would take part in the re-opening of Disneyland’s Space Mountain) became the very first human to set foot on the moon.
July 20, 1975 – Actor Jason Raize was born in Oneota, N.Y. He was best known as the original adult Simba in the Broadway Musical version of “The Lion King” and as the voice of Denahi in the Disney animated feature “Brother Bear.”
July 20, 1981 – TIME magazine ran an article titled “The Great Era of Walt Disney” in this week’s issue.
July 20, 1985 – Virgil Waytes, Jr. became the 200,000,000th guest at WDW.
