...well, to be more precise, it has tunneled itself a little hole under our front steps.

I know my snakes well enough to know it isn't poisonous, so I took a picture of it while it was "sunning" itself in my flower bed. I think it's a king snake. My farmer father-in-law tells me a king snake is a good snake to have around, as it will eat mice and keep "bad" snakes away.

I don't want to kill it, but I wish I could hang a little bell around its neck so I'd know when it was outside. I'm afraid it's going to scare the daylights out of a visitor one day, though...

Any thoughts? Can a snake be relocated? We live next to the woods--if we took it out there, would it just come back?

I really dont think there is much you can do to "relocate" it other than trap it and release it into the wild. I guess it would be unnerving to step outside and see any snake. Yikes! King snakes are good snakes however - out here where we have lots of poisonous snakes Id be glad to have one around IF the cats werent always scaring ALL the snakes off! :cat:... and birds ... and squirrels

Our cats never scared away our squirrels or raccoons or possums or rattlesnakes or anything else.:(

LOL well I didnt say possums ... we cant leave any food out because possums will come up on the second floor patio and eat it while the cats lay on the chairs pretending to sleep. Meanwhile those critters are LOUD enough to make me run outside to see whats going on. After I chase the possum off, they pretend to wake up and act as if "oh.. whats going on" Thank goodness theyre up to date on their shots.. I can only assume theyve got into a scrap or 2 with them

No such luck from me...Snakes have a way of relocating me. I don't think I have the umph to keep any kind of snake around. When I see a dead one on the road, I can't even bring myself to run over it because I'm afraid it won't be dead, will get caught under my truck and get inside while I'm driving.

Snakes are the one thing that will scare me to no end. I can't even look at them in zoos behind glass.

Good luck though!!!

We have two snakes on our front porch. One is a little guy. Pretty sure it's just a regular snake. But the other one is big and deadly. Whenever I throw the door open, there it is! I scared the poor baby snake (And vice versa!). We both backed up and I screamed and he took off the other way. I hope I don't encounter the poisonous one!
Good luck with catching your snake!

You sound like me if I see one on the road I'm rolling up the windows and looking in the mirror to see if I can see him flopping around and if not then I'm panicking.

I guess if Kaa isn't doing meet-and-greets in the park he's making himself happy under your porch!

Well, I don't have much advice, all I can say is it's better than a snake in your boot ;) :cowboy: (I couldn't find a Woody smiley) I know, really bad joke

Snakes make me want to "crawl" myself. If I saw one here, it would likely be a rattler, and I'd need CPR.:ambal:

My husband and I have moved quite a few snakes from our yard. We trap them in a huge trash container and take them down by the river. I'm not sure if it's the "right" thing to do, but the last thing I need is to reach under a plant and pull out a snake! And I could never bring myself to kill a harmless black snake. Fortunately that's all we've found so far!

Any thoughts? ?

Move?
You are much braver than I am...Snakes are my worst fear...I would call animal control or someone to take it away...Good luck...Maybe it will go away on its own...

Snakes must like porches! A few days ago we came home and found a pretty good size snake in our screened in porch. I guess it had come in through a little cut in the screen and then couldn't get out. He was more scared of us than we were of him! So I got a big stick and guided him out the door and we then escorted him to the empty lot next to our house.

I know the feeling. I can't even look at them on the TV either. Talk about screaming!!!!

I think I'd rather have a snake under my porch then in my house...my oldest daughter brought home a ball python which now resides in an aquarium in her bedroom!!

Snakes are bad here this year. We've had several King snakes around (the ones with the yellow dots) I don't mind them but they did eat my turtle eggs :( I had this huge turtle lay eggs and I believe the snake ate them. I'm hoping they eat moles b/c I have trouble keeping them away from my box gardens. We live in an area that was old swampland, near the Mississippi. There is a huge pond behind my fence and critters are always coming to visit. Last week was the first time I saw a cotton mouth. It was in the street when we were coming home and I told my dd to run over him:thedolls: I've been a little skittish since, even jumped at the sight of the soaker hose the other day:blush:
My mom has a king snake that lives by her door and every once in a while he's sunning on the steps and the kids have come running up only to stop and scream b/c they just jumped over the snake :eyes: I've also seen a blue runner in the back yard. I'm just afraid the dogs will get bit :(

We lived in the middle of the swamp on a bayou and I am still very skittish around snakes. Give me an alligator any day but keep the snakes....
