It was estimated that 100,000 people would attend Opening Day at the Magic Kingdom in 1971. Fearing traffic jams, overcrowding, and fueled by media hype, only 10,000 actually showed up.

That's always amazed me. I wonder if the media really hyped it that much that people stayed away or what? I'm sure it baffled a few Disney execs, probably even scared them a little.

Was this in part due to the massive overcrowding at Disneyland's grand opening?
Either way, it must have been a much calmer way to open the park. :thumbsup:
