As some of you already know, we had to have our 14 yo female cat put to sleep on Tuesday. This evening around 5p, our nearly 17 yo male cat had blood in his urine. He peed about 6 times in 20 min - all small amounts and all with blood in them. Afterwards, he ate dinner normally and was drinking water. He peed one more time before I left and that had some blood in it too, but not as much as the others. I think he has a bladder infection but cannot get him to the vet until tomorrow as the 2 nearest emergency vets are 30+ to 60+ min away - he'd never tolerate the car ride that long plus I'm at work until 7a. I hope he just has a bladder infection. Please send some pixie dust our way that he'll be okay - I can't lose another kitty so soon!

Update: we lost him yesterday, July 8.

I hope your little fur baby gets better. Hopefully it is a bladder infection which can be treated and he will be happy and running the house once again.

It might be worth the drive if here has a blockage. Check his lower abdomen for a swollen bladder it will feel like an orange below his tummy. If he has that you might want to head to that ER. A blockage like that is very serious! We just had to go through this with our cat.

Here's a little pixie dust :pixie: and a small prayer.

I called home and DH said he seems fine. He's gone a couple more times and there's still some blood in the urine - I don't expect that to go away without treatment - but he's still eating and drink and acting perfectly normal.

Same here with our male cat...back a few years ago. Male cats get crystals in their urine that block them up.

I hope everything is okay with your cat.

Thanks for all the pixie dust - it's been working! We have an appointment for 10:30a. He seems okay this morning - I think he's laying around just a little more than usual but there hasn't been any more obvious blood in his urine. Hopefully the vet will have good things to say and we can get him fixed up quick!

Kathy, with all the pixie dust you've sent for my furbabies I have to send it back with a little extra. I just hope you can find your kitty under all that dust ;)
Hope everything turns out fine. Waiting to hear. :cat:

So far, so good! The vet feels it's a bladder infection so we're treating him for that. He's now on Clavamox liquid twice a day. He also has a thyroid nodule so they drew some blood and he'll probably be put on thyroid medication after we get the results tomorrow. He does have a heart murmur and he may have some decreased kidney function but the vet seems to think that these will not be a major issue if the thyroid is brought under control. Poor little guy looks so funny now - his fur gets knotted rather easily and I can't seem to keep him brushed out since he hates it and fights back with teeth and claws. His fur on his belly and backside was somewhat matted so they shaved him - he looks like he had a bad accident with a weedwacker! And through it all, he was such a good boy.

Poor cat....makes me laugh thinking about him getting shaved-down on his stomach!

What is his name, anyway?

Good luck on the thyroid and bladder problem!

Good luck on the thyroid and bladder problem! His name is Gypsy - DH found him as a kitten just wandering around town. He was sitting by their fence at the time. He was MIL's cat but after she passed away and FIL got remarried, I kidnapped him and he's been mine for the past 8 years. If I can, I'll try to get a picture of him all shaved posted to the thread. It really is very funny.

Gypsy seems to be feeling better although somewhat undignified after that haircut. Here are some photos:

Thanks for all the pixie dust. I truly believe it made all the difference for him.

Here's the latest - he does have hyperthyroid issues from that nodule so now he's on another medication for that. He goes back in 3 weeks for a recheck to make sure it's working. He hates that liquid antibiotic - I have to put him in a headlock to get it in him, but he took the thyroid pill in a little moist food with no problems at all - he even let me look in his mouth to see if he swallowed it. Thanks for all the pixie dust - I'm sure that's what pulled him through!

I know I'm coming in on the end of this, but I'm glad your Gypsy is doing so much better. By the looks of the pics though, it looks like the weedwacker won.

More :pixie: to make sure she pulls through wonderfully.

I swear to God that just about killed me! Gypsy is standing and looking regal in that first picture and in the second one he's so sad he can't even stand up! That is just too funny!

If you can manage, my routine to do liquid medicine: I scruff my cat with one hand and squirt the medicine down his throat with the other. Sometimes you can get the vet to give you pills instead of liquid too.

I'm glad that Gypsy is on the road to recovery!

Sorry Kathy to hear of your kitties passing and then to hear about your other kitty!

I am glad to hear he is doing better, though.

Those little guys have such a special place in our hearts, it is hard when they are sick or have to go to kitty heaven.

I can empathize completely, as we had a very sick Tigger (14yo male cat) about a month ago, and I prayed that he would be okay. Fortunately, he was.

Pixie dust to the family and kitty too!!

Tell Megan that Kaylee sends a "Hello" her way!

Oh, I'm glad he's doing better. We used to have cats - then one day, I was allergic. I still love them, but doggies are my bag now.:dog:

My mom has a four pound, 20 year old cat, so Charlie and Gypsy must be doing something right.:cat:

Actually Marilyn, we lost him too yesterday. He had a really good week last week then started going downhill on Monday. He was very weak and anemic and obviously in pain Tuesday am so I called and got an appointment. The vet confirmed that there was really nothing more we could do for him so we made the hard decision. Both of our babies are now buried together on the hill behind our house, keeping each other company.

I know I'm coming in late here but as the proud mama of 4 furbabies (2 12yo cats, a 5 yo cat, and a 2 yo dog) I had to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. We've been fortunate that our babies have stayed healthy but as they are getting older I worry more and sympathize over your loss. They really are like members of your family...my Smokey (a 12yo female) is my baby until I can have kids (which won't be until I finish law school and have worked awhile and I just start school in August!). At least you know that they are playing together again. :(

Kathy, so sorry to hear about Gypsy. I can't offer anything more than my pixie dust and comfort. I hope that your family will heal soon, knowing he's out there playing again, not in any pain.

Hopefully you'll be able to open up your home and your heart to another fur baby in need.
