May 22, 1915 – Writer, cartoonist & animator George Baker was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. In 1937, Baker would go out to Hollywood to work for Disney. For the next 4 years, he would work on virtually all of Disney’s well-known pictures, including “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” and “Dumbo.” In June 1941 he would be inducted into the army where he’ll create the comic strip “The Sad Sack.”
May 22, 1942 – Disney’s Pluto Cartoon “The Army Mascot” was released.
May 22, 1968 – Walt Disney Travel Co. was incorporated in Florida. The company will work with travel agents and individuals planning vacations to the yet-to-be-opened WDW Resort. (The service would be expanded to California 4 years later.)
May 22, 1977 – The Disney TV movie “The Bluegrass Special” aired.
May 22, 1985 – Wolfgang “Woolie” Reitherman, known for his directing work on Disney films like “Jungle Book”, and “The Aristocats”, and one of Walt’s “Nine Old Men”, was killed in a car accident in Burbank, Ca.
May 22, 1987 – The Disney/Touchstone film “Ernest Goes to Camp,” starring Jim Varney, Victoria Racimo, John Vernon, and Iron Eyes Cody, was released.
May 22, 1988 – The Disney TV show aired “Meet the Muncey’s.”
May 22, 1989 – The Disney Channel TV series “Match Point” began airing. (Ended June 23, 1989)
May 22, 1989 – The Disney Channel aired episode 21 of MMC. “Today is Music Day!”
May 22, 1992 – The Disney/Hollywood Pictures film “Encino Man” was released.
