May 11, 1983 – Sketch artist Albert Hunter was born in Zurich, Switzerland. He would be the first ever inspirational sketch artist to work at the Walt Disney Studio (between 1931-1942). Hunter would be known for his significant contribution to the visual styles of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “Pinocchio.”
May 11, 1904 – Artist Salvador Dali, who was hired in 1946 by Walt Disney to work on the short “Destino,” and the project would later be abandoned, was born in Figueras, Catalonia.
May 11, 1911 – Tony-Award winning comedic actor Phil Silvers was born in N.Y.C. His Disney credits include “The Strongest Man in the World,” and “The Boatniks.”
May 11, 1912 – Animator Don Towsley was born in Milwaukee, Wi. His Disney credits include such features as “Pinocchio,” “Fantasia,” “Dumbo,” and “Bambi.”
May 11, 1913 – Composer, arranger, trumpeter, and Disney Legend Salvador “Tutti” Camarata was born in Glen Ridge, N.J. In 1956 Walt Disney would hire him to form Disney Records and to be music director and producer for the label. Two years later Camarata would purchase a building (an old Auto repair shop) that would become Sunset Sound Recorders. Sunset would be one of the best independent studios in Hollywood. During his 16 years with Disney, he would produce over 300 albums!
May 11, 1920 – Actor Denver Pyle was born in Bethune, Co. Pyle’s Disney credits include the features “Escape to Witch Mountain,” and “Return From Witch Mountain,” and the Disneyland TV episodes “Hog Wild,” and “The Boy Who Talked to Badgers.” (He was best known to fans of The Dukes of Hazzard as Uncle Jesse.)
May 11, 1944 – Columbia Pictures’ “Once Upon a Time” was released. Starring Cary Grant, the film tells a story of a boy, his dancing caterpillar, and the man who wants to make them famous. Walt Disney’s name is mentioned throughout the film and there is even a scene of Walt (played by Walter Fenner), over long-distance phone from Hollywood, offering $100,000 for the caterpillar!
May 11, 2004 – Walt Disney Records Presents “Mega Movie Mix” was released. The CD features songs from Walt Disney Pictures and Disney Channel Original Movies.
May 11, 2005 – The ABC-TV show “Live with Regis and Kelly” originated from WDW to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Disneyland.
May 11, 2006 – Starting this day, graduates nation-wide gathered to celebrate the road ahead at Disneyland Resort’s Grad Nite presented by Honda.
