Mar. 13, 1900 – Writer Ted Sears was born in Massachusetts. His Disney credits would include “Sleeping Beauty,” the “Disneyland TV” series, “The Vanishing Praire,” and “The Living Desert.”
Mar. 13, 1928 – On a train ride to California with his wife Lillian, Walt Disney sent his brother and business partner Roy a Western Union Telegram that read. “LEAVING TONITE STOPPING OVER KC ARRIVE HOME SUNDAY MORNING SEVEN THIRTY DON’T WORRY EVERYTHING OK WILL GIVE DETAILS WHEN ARRIVE WALT”. This is in reference to Walt’s new idea for an animated mouse.
Mar. 13, 1936 – The Tulsa Tribune quotes writer Thornton Wilder as telling a lecture audience, “The two presiding geniuses of the movies are Walt Disney and Charlie Chaplin.”
Mar. 13, 1937 – Disney’s Silly Symphony cartoon “Woodland Café”, was released.
Mar. 13, 1947 – At the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, Ca. the Walt Disney Studio Sound Department won an Oscar for innovations in locating noise in sound tracks at the 19th Annual Academy Awards.
Mar. 13, 1960 – Joe Ranft, the voice of Jacques in the 2003 Disney/Pixar “Finding Nemo,” was born in Pasadena, Ca. He is also the voice of Heimlich in the 1998 “A Bug’s Life” and the story supervisor for both “Toy Story” features. His writing credits include “The Lion King,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Rescuers Down Under,” and “Oliver & Company.”
Mar. 13, 1966 – The Disney TV show aired “Run, Light Buck, Run.”
Mar. 13, 2000 – The Omnimover vehicles were removed from the closed Horizons attraction in Epcot. Since the beginning of this month, the building has been emptied in preparation for demolition. (Mission: SPACE will take its place.)
Mar. 13, 2001 – A 1,500-acre spread of the Disney Wilderness Preserve in Polk County, Fl. continued to burn after a power line fell and ignited some brush. (The fire affected land donated by the Walt Disney Co. to the Nature Conservancy, a non-profit environmental group that is attempting to return some of the pastureland there to its original swamp condition.
Mar. 13, 2007 – Hannah Montana kicked off the new D*Concert series on Disney XD. The three month concert series would feature artists such as High School Musical and Cheetah Girls.
