Feb. 26, 1732 – Francis Marion, a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later Brigadier General in the South Carolina Militia during the American Revolutionary War, was born in Georgetown, S.C. Known as the “Swamp Fox,” for his ability to use decoy and ambush tactics to disrupt enemy communications, capture supplies, and free prisoners, his exploits would be the inspiration for a TV series produced in the mid-1950’s by Walt Disney.
Feb. 26, 1920 – Actor Tony Randall who was born Leonard Rosenberg in Tulsa, Ok. Appeared in the 1989 TV Special “The Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park Grand Opening” and the 1987 TV special “Walt Disney Celebrity Circus”
Feb. 26, 1934 – Disney’s “Building a Building” and “Three Little Pigs” were nominated for Academy Awards.
Feb. 26, 1941 – Walt Disney sent an interoffice communication stating that “Under present conditions, the laying out of cash for equipment is out of line. Our situation is plenty tough and after returning from a session with the bankers we can and we will still have to cut further”. Disney is forced to focus on cutbacks.
Feb. 26, 1960 – The Walt Disney Presents TV show aired episode 11 of “Texas John Slaughter: Kentucky Gunslick.”
Feb. 26, 1962 – Academy Award nominations were announced. Disney’s “The Absent Minded Professor” earned 3; “Parent Trap” earned 2; “Babes in Toyland” was recognized for 2; and “Aquamania” earned 1.
Feb. 26, 1981 – The Disney/Hollywood Pictures film “Money for Nothing” was released.
Feb. 26, 1998 – James Algar, known for his work on “Disney True Life Adventure” series, including the episodes “Beaver Valley”, “Bear Country”, and “The Living Desert”. He also wrote and produced the “Hall of Presidents” attraction at WDW.
Feb. 26, 2002 – An unclaimed Mickey Mouse snow globe cleared out a section of the Sacramento International Airport after being mistaken for a bomb. It caused 150 people to be evacuated from the B-1 terminal and 5 outbound flights delayed.
Feb. 26, 2006 – “The Timekeeper” attraction closed in Tomorrowland in the Magic Kingdom at WDW.
