Feb. 12, 1809 – Abraham Lincoln (our 16th president) was born in Hardin County, Kentucky. He would be the subject of such Disney attractions as Greatest Moments with Mr. Lincoln (originally displayed at the 1964 World’s Fair) and WDW’s Hall of Presidents.
Feb. 12, 1934 - Walt Disney Productions filed an application for a trademark for “Mickey Mouse”.
Feb. 12, 1945 – Disney’s Educational film “The Right Spark Plug in the Right Place” made for Electric Auto-Lite Co. was released.
Feb. 12, 1951 - Disney’s “Cinderella” was nominated for 3 Academy Awards and the short “In Beaver Valley” was nominated for 1.
Feb. 12, 1960 – The Walt Disney Presents TV show aired episode 9 of “Texas John Slaughter: Desperado from Tombstone.”
Feb. 12, 1988 – Illusionist Siegfried and Roy appeared to make Sleeping Beauty Castle disappear during a national broadcast TV special “Disney’s Magic in the Magic Kingdom.”
Feb. 12, 1999 - Disney’s “My Favorite Martian”, starring Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Daniels, Elizabeth Hurley, Darryl Hannah, and Ray Walston was released.
Feb. 12, 2001 – Ilene Woods, the original voice of Cinderella, appeared at a Cinderella Ball in Disneyland to celebrate the anniversary of the motion picture.
Feb. 12, 2007 – Disney announced that they are producing “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” as a live-action feature starring Nicholas Cage as the Sorcerer. The film will be based on Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s original poem, not the Mickey Mouse sequence in Fantasia.
Feb. 12, 2007 – Academy Award-winning Visual Effects pioneer/matte artist and Disney Legend Peter Ellenshaw passed away at his home in Santa Barbara, Ca. at the age of 93. A handpicked member of Walt Disney’s creative team since 1947, Ellenshaw was called upon to create a wide variety of visual effects for such films as “Mary Poppins,” “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” “Darby O’Gill and the Little People,” “Treasure Island,” and “The Black Hole.” He even painted the iconic first map of Disneyland that was featured on all the early postcards and souvenir booklets.
