Dec. 5, 1901 - Walter Elias Disney was born to Flora and Elias Disney in their house at 1249 Tripp Avenue in Chicago, Il. He was named to honor the Disney family’s preacher and friend, Walter Parr.
Dec. 5, 1951 – Walt wrote his traditional birthday letter to his sister Ruth. He describes his Christmas TV show, his current feature “Robin Hood,” and his newest production “Peter Pan.” Walt also wrote of his two daughters Diane and Sharon. He states: I always tell myself I’m going to buy you something for your birthday, but when I get right down to the matter of color, size, and what, I’m bewildered and stuck. So here it is, the check – now you go out and buy something that you’ll like.”
Dec. 5, 1955 – The Mickey Mouse Club aired the episode “Today is Fun With Music Day” on ABC-TV.
Dec. 5, 1965 – Singer-songwriter John Rzeznik (of the Goo-Goo Dolls), and would compose and perform 2 songs as the voice of Jim Hawkins in Disney’s 2002 animated feature “Treasure Planet,” was born in Buffalo, N.Y.
Dec. 5, 1966 – The ill Walt Disney celebrated his last birthday while in the hospital.
Dec. 5, 1985 – The city of Anaheim saluted Disneyland (on the birthday of Walt Disney) with a world-record release of one million balloons over the park. The 70,000 pounds of helium used was enough to lift 190 people into the air.
Dec. 5, 1986 – “Walt Disney Recognition Day” was officially celebrated in the U.S.
Dec. 5, 2001 – Disney fans around the world celebrated Walt Disney’s 100th Birthday.
Dec. 5, 2001 – Walt Disney’s Hometown 100th Birthday Celebration (in Marceline, Missouri) took place with a variety of activities. The town’s Uptown Theatre hosted free showings of the two Disney movies that first premiered in Marceline, “The Great Locomotive Chase,” and “The Spirit of Mickey.” In the early evening fruit juice sales began on Main Street USA in front of Ripley Park where the city would toast Disney during a special ceremony.
Dec. 5, 2001 – Disneyland held a special ceremony commemorating the 100th Birthday of Walt at 11:30am in the Plaza Hub at the end of Main Street. Hosted by Disneyland Resort President Cynthia Harriss, the program payed homage to Walt Disney in story and song with special appearances by legendary Disney Imagineer John Hench and Academy Award-winning composer Richard M. Sherman.

It's hard to imagine this all began 106 years ago today. I wonder if they'll do anything special at any of the parks today.
