Sept. 11, 1968 – The U.S. Postal Service paid tribute to Walt Disney with the release of a 6 cent commemorative postage stamp. (The portrait featured on the stamp was created by Disney artist Paul Wenzel.) A limited number of the stamps were adhered to commemorative envelopes and hand cancelled in Marceline, Missouri.
Sept. 11, 1979 – Legendary animator Les Clark, one of Walt’s “Nine Old Men,” passed away just 6 months after being diagnosed with cancer.
Sept. 11, 1987 – The presentation of the real Pooh (an 18’-high teddy bear given to Christopher Robin Milne in 1921) and friends (various toys received as gifts by Christopher between 1920 and 1928) to the New York Public Library took place.
Sept. 11, 1988 – “The Disney Sunday Movie” aired for the last time on ABC. The following month the long-running TV series would move to NBC and be called “The Magical World of Disney.”
Sept. 11, 1995 – Disney’s syndicated TV series “Danny,” starring Danny Bonaduce, began airing. (Ended Feb. 2, 1996)
Sept. 11, 1998 – The 16th Annual “Night of Joy” (2-day event) began in the Magic Kingdom at WDW.
Sept. 11, 2001 – Following the morning terrorist attacks on The Pentagon, and New York City’s World Trade Center, The Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, and The Disneyland Resort in California closed without incident. All the resort hotels remained opened and provided accommodations to guests who were unable to leave. Phone charges were suspended so that guests could reach family. (The closure marked only the 2nd time Disneyland has locked its gates in its 56-year history due to a national tragedy. The first time followed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963.)
Sept. 11, 2001 – At Disneyland Resort, food and beverage stations remained open at no charge to guests who were at the Park. AMC Theaters at Downtown Disney showed free Disney films for stranded Resort guests.
Sept. 11, 2001 – The Disney Stores closed as well as Disney’s Broadway shows in New York and on the road.
Sept. 11, 2001 – Michael Eisner released a statement to Cast Members explaining the Disney closings. He ended his note with these words: “Finally let me say our company around the world will continue to operate in this sometimes violent world in which we live, offering products that reach to the higher and more positive side of the human equation.”
