I'm back with some all new reviews, starting off with a week long look at Disney World's roller coasters, kicking it off with the one that started it all. :coaster:

Space Mountain

“Space Mountain may be the oldest ride in the park, but it still has the longest line!” – Ric Flair

Intro: Arguably the most famous ride in Disney World and most famous roller coaster anywhere, Space Mountain opened in 1975. When it opened, it was the first of what would become five different “Space Mountains” at Disney parks around the world. The Magic Kingdom version serves as a “bridge” between the original Disney roller coaster, Disneyland’s Matterhorn, with the high tech and more thrilling future incarnations of Space Mountain.

Queue: The line usually begins outside in Tomorrowland before making its way into the large white “futuristic” building meant to represent some type of mountain. Inside, guests make their way through slightly illuminated hallways and televisions playing some kind of goofiness that has nothing to do with anything before finally approaching a “space port” (or, so Wikipedia tells me.) It’s here where we can do fun stuff like look up and try to spot phantom chocolate chip cookies being projected on the ceiling, or wave at the TTA cars going by, or ride a roller coaster.

Ride: After boarding incredibly uncomfortable for anyone over 5’7 and/or 120 lbs. “rockets” the ride blasts off through a cleverly constructed tunnel thing. First a lighted sign on the wall reads “All Systems Go” and then the rockets make their way up a lift hill inside of a tunnel with moving lights all around, apparently to indicate that the cars, err rockets, are moving much faster than about 2 miles per hour. The whole experience is kind of like an episode of Battlestar Galactica only without the robots, crazy British scientist, or Edward James Olmos.

After the thrilling (??) lighted tunnel sequence, the rockets move into ANOTHER TUNNEL. Joy. More helpful lighted signs note that only ten seconds remain before takeoff. Once things finally do, in fact, “take off” the rockets careen down some dips and over some hills and around in circles, all in the dark, with various white dots projected all over to indicate stars or something. The monotony is broken up with another lighted tunnel (novel idea, I know) just to make sure the eyes don’t get too accustomed to the darkness, thus ruining all of the space travel fun.

Things come to a conclusion after about two minutes of flipping and flopping around in the dark when the rockets return to a totally unthemed drop off point that, chances are, is in direct proximity to a gift shop.

Thoughts: Let’s see, there are some things Space Mountain is and some things Space Mountain isn’t.

First off, Space Mountain is not a very good roller coaster. It’s basically a wild mouse (and not an especially great one) in the dark with some “special effects” that are absolutely cheesy compared to what Disney is capable of producing. It also has no easily discernable storyline, although I do remember some type of craziness about a shipping company being involved when FedEx was the sponsor.

However, Space Mountain IS a fun ride, and a really great coaster for younger thrill seekers who need to build up their bravery before tackling Rockin’ Roller Coaster, Expedition Everest, or any of the mammoth coasters at Islands of Adventure, Six Flags, Busch Gardens, etc. (or, for that matter, any riders who just aren’t into loops, G-forces, and other vomit inducing ride mechanisms.)

Space Mountain constantly has long lines with 60, 120, or even 180 minute waits possible depending on the season. It is absolutely not worth that kind of wait for any reason. I think its continued popularity and reputation as a great roller coaster has a lot more to do with the fact that (and especially in decades prior) it is one of the only thrill rides at Disney World. The Jungle Cruise and the Country Bear Jamboree are fun but if you want to scream your lungs out while flying in a little train at 60 miles per hour, the options are slim. Plus, Space Mountain is how many coaster enthusiasts got their first taste of a thrill ride and fond memories remain.

Unfortunately, for a roller coaster, it’s nothing spectacular and really, in the grand scheme of things, it’s nothing all that special in terms of theming or effects for Disney either. In fact, it's not even the best roller coaster in the Magic Kingdom. Disney would take the idea of a roller coaster for the masses and perfect it, Disney style, just a few years later in Frontierland. But that’s a review for another time.

Overall Rating: *** 1/2

Nice review, but I give Space Mountain a little more credit than you do-- four stars. I wouldn't miss it. I've seen lines as short as twenty minutes quite often, but it's worth waiting longer if you have to. It's a good ride to fastpass.

I'd say the review was unduly harsh calling it a wild mouse type ride. That it definitely is not. It is a coaster and the darkness is what marks it different from most. The one at Disneyland is better but retrofit at WDW really isn't an option.

I think the long lines tell you that the average person votes it better than the review.

I was a bit confused by the goofy tv part, there are no tv's anymore, they were removed years ago exacept at the very end where its just tv cameras

gotta side with the reviewer a little- it is very much a wild mouse, but the darkness is what pushes it from 3 to 4 stars. the theming is good, not great, but its position as a classic has got to earn it some points as well.

I think the long walk from the entrance to the queue (sic?) is as much a part of the attraction as the ride itself. Making that long trek really brings back nostalgic feelings.

yea the news ones are a pian for me bc i usually end up getting the 1st or 3rd seat on the WDW version and those are the ones with very little room and im a tall person so im being cramped in there. they need new ones. i gave the ride a 5 star just because its great, better then any ride similar to it i have ever rode and it has its own unique disney touch to it that no other ride can match

SM was always one of my favorite rides. Last year it just seemed cramped and uncomfortable  I don't know what had changed, it could just be that WDW has added more modern mountains/rides with better seating, but I now have no desire to ride SM at all. I'd rather ride Splash or BTMt. They just seem more comfortable and fun

I have to be totally honest, I've only ever been on with a Fastpass or on E-Ride night, so I always assumed that I either was unable to see (FP) or ignored (E Night) the "Space Mountain TV" show that they used to have. All I know is that I have a part of it downloaded from the old Digital Disney site and I think I remember that it included Slater from Saved by the Bell. I didn't realize the TV's were gone.

Also, I would be remiss in not mentioning something I wanted to joke about in the original review: the horrible knockoff at Cedar Point called "Disaster Transport." It's basically the same "story" and "theme" as Space Mountain, only it's 10 times cheesier and not in any way a good ride.

I would have to give SM at least 4 stars. I agree that the "special effects" are a little cheesey, but I think part of what makes it special is that it is in the dark. I loved it as a child, my children now love it, and we ride it several times during every visit. In fact before EMH's, we bought the E-ride Night tickets(a few years ago) and were able to ride it 13 times in a row one night! That is a great memory.

In my opinion, I rated Space Mountain as one of the better attractions.
Why? you ask, it would be the overall theming. Impressive structure, as you approach it, the anticipation builds. I especially love the queue, especially the Fast Pass queue:D. The music and the surroundings continue to set a futuristic mood. Then when you arrive at the loading area, hop in the next vehicle and you are off, hurltling thru space!
The darkness, the turns and the sudden drops all combine to make Space Mountain a unique experience.

Calling Space Mountain a "wild mouse" is like calling POC a "tunnel of love." Sure it's the same basic transport, but that's where any similarity ends. Much of the charm and fun of WDW's Space Mountain IS the retro-semi cheesy feel. It's clear that this ISN'T a ride that's desined to make you blow your lunch all over the place, but it's IS designed to be fun, plain and simple. I , for one, love it!:mickey:

I really liked it better back in its earlier days when FedEx was the sponsor. I still think it is a fun ride but we haven't gone on it the last couple of times because of the seats. DH and I both thought they were very uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of (LOL! We're not as young as we used to be!)

I agree that it is not the most thrilling technologically advanced ride in WDW. BUT it is a fun roller coaster and a disney classic. I wouldn't mind if they decide to refurb this ride but I hope they keep it's spirit intact. :D

If SM was not in the dark and did not have the current theme, it would be not much of a ride. SM was one of the first of its’ kind for being totally indoors and it is a DW classic. It is one of my top 5 rides at DW , but I do think it needs a rehab to update the entry and exit queue. :mickey:

Definately 5 stars. SM is the best ride at MK. The theming is great and the effects are awsome.:mickey: The cars have a cool look, and the outside is neat also.

If they make SM like the DLR version than it would be one of the best rides in the park. SM at MK needs a major refurbishment.

Space Mountain is still awesome after all these years! :coaster: There is more to a great ride than having your wits scared out of you. It's got to do with magic! And Space Mountain has magic! It's not fast, it doesn't turn you upside down, but what it does do is keep people coming back! It is a wonderful ride! :mickey:

Basically I can't imagine WDW or the Magic Kingdom with Space Mountain -- on that basis it is rates 5 stars.

I agree if built today it would would be better and it does need up-dating and refurbishment, but nonetheless the ride is truly unique and deserves the highest rating.:mickey:

I would give it 4 stars. I agree on a lot of points of the OP. The theming is kind of cheesy, and the coaster isn't a great coaster. However, it is a Disney classic, which makes it rate a little higher in my opinion!

I agree that Space Mountain is not the best attraction and doesn't even make my top 10 list at the resort. However, I look at the ride in the historical context. Space Mountain is now way behind with technology and what can be done today. When it was built, though, it was ahead of its time and has become a classic.

I look at it this way. Compare it to the movie Star Wars. I never saw Star Wars until 20 years later. I just missed it as a kid. 20 years later it was not that great. I couldn't understand the "hype." I think when this movie was made it was way ahead of its time for movie making in the mid-70's. People grew to love the movie and it became a classic.

To me Space Mountain and Star Wars are classics for a very similar reason.

Space Mountain is still a pretty great ride - even compared to the two newest ones EE & R'nRC. I am, however, one of the folks who believe a refurb. could bring this coaster back to its former glory. Funky lights, a soundtrack, and more comfortable cars would be fab.

I gave it 3 stars. I like space mountain but as of now, with todays technology, I can only give it 3 stars. I like it and I never miss it but you can tell it's a "classic" ride.

I marked it as "one of the better rides around" because, while I find it as an "absolute can't-miss" kind of ride, I could definitely see where it could be improved with sound effects in the cars, perhaps bigger drops, maybe even a loop or two or something along those lines.

Its fun, but its nothing to brag about. I would say the fact that its in the dark and theres stars and meteors projected distracts from the almost boring track. I don't get a rush when I am on this ride. The queue area up to the take off is really fun and exciting, even the return, but the ride itself doesnt do much but make me wish I was 7 or 8 so I could truly enjoy it all.

A classic Disney ride that after 30 years is still above average. I gave SM 4 stars but could have went 5.

From a pure thrill ride/rollercoaster perspective SM is relatively mild by todays theme park standards. SM is so much more though. The que, the dark ride and the retro feel all play into making this classic a great ride. I also like the fact that SM is not to extreme and allows for a lot of riders who cannot tolerate the new age rollercoasters (many of SM's riders cannot handle the new crop of coasters).

I think many posters are too negative about Space Mountain. Though I agree with every point the reviewer made about the ride, I do not view them as downsides. Space Mountain is not a thrilling roller coaster like Rock 'n' Roller Coaster or Expedition Everest, but it is an exciting and fun ride.

Space Mountain links to Tomorrowland which links to Magic Kingdom. All three are necessary. I give the attraction four stars, partially because of the sentimental value it holds for so many Disney fans.

Bump! Just so people don't forget about the countdown I planned on finishing a month ago.
