View Full Version : WDW Attraction with Most Recognizable Odor

I could only think of a handful of these, but some just have always stuck with me. Which is most memorable to you? (There is an option for 'other', in case I've left one out or you have another in mind.)

Splash Mtn - The mildewy, wet smell of the ride logs.

Space Mtn - The odor of the ventilation system within the building.

Spaceship Earth - Rome burning.

Soarin - The smell of pine or oranges.

I like the 'other' option, even tho i didnt use it, because the first thing i thought of was the old Journey into Imagination ride...the 'white' room where everything was gloriously white, it always smelled like roses upon entry...i just love that. every now and again in 'real' life if i get a whiff of that somewhere, i think of Figment and it makes me smile!!:cloud9:

I voted for Spaceship Earth, but I remember journey into imagination (the original) having a strong smell of nail varnish remover!

Also the smell of the L'oranges on Horizons!

Tough question - I went with Splash, if for no other reason that its one of my favorites.

I voted "other". There is another odor in Journey Into Imagination that sticks with you too.

A not so pleasant one. :secret:

I choose other because I like the smell of the apple pie in Mickey's PhillarMagic better than the other smells listed!!!:mickey:

It has got to be Soarin for me
If i think hard enough i can still smell the pine trees and oranges :cloud9:

I went with other because, it's definitely not a pleasant smell or memory, but that awful chili dog smell from Stitch Great Escape.

Not exactly an attraction, but the monorail has a distinct smell. Some have complained about it during summer months (kitty box smell), but in Dec., it's more like ???????an elevator - air conditioned medical aroma. I can't think of a better discription, but when I go to our hospital to volunteer, I always think "monorail ".:D

The sulphur smell of Rome burning was always one of the first 'smells' of Disney for use since we almost always rode SSE first. Maybe not now after the refurb.

07-15-2007, 01:02 PM
Definately the smell on SSE. I actually miss that smell every so often. Luckily I'm not one of those who've been stuck on the ride at that part. I've heard a few stories about people never wanting to smell it again after stopping right next to it.

On the not so nice side, there's always the smell of the stinkbug on Bug's Life at AK. Gaagh. :mickey:

I voted Splash Mountain! Every once and a while I will run in to that same smell here - and immediately recognize it.

And there's also the smell in the Tower of Terror lobby - not sure how to describe it but its an awesome smell too!

I chose other because I think both Spaceship Earth and Soarin tie for the most memorable smell. I have a citrus hand lotion that reminds me of Soarin and who can forget Rome burning?

I voted for Rome burning. When I get to that point in the ride I just turn to my family and smile...like I AM back at WDW and loving it:mickey:

Second pick would be the oranges at Soarin'!

Well i guess I will be old school here too. I went with SSE and the Rome Burning Smell but my fondest memory of Scents at disney is Oranges on Horizons I haven't rode soarin yet but can't wait to do so.

There's a hard to identify smell about RRC. I don't know whether it's deliberate or just comes from the ride mechanisms... I guess it kind of fits with the garage motif. Anyway, when I step out into the "alley" and catch a whiff of it, it's like I'm already in the limo. :cloud9: ...sort of like when I'm far from WDW but I hear "Walk This Way" or "Sweet Emotion" or "Dude Looks Like a Lady"... :cloud9: ...and yeah, Aerosmith's good but I'm not that much of a fan of theirs. :)

.... when I get on the monorail my first thought is WET BANDAID. I THANKFULLY have never gotten the 'kitty box smell' but that "air conditioned medical aroma" describes it perfectly (having worked in an ER for over a year)!!

The Queue area of POTC has a unique smell and so does the Caverns in the beginning of the ride

I had to go with Rome burning. :mickey: We ate something barbecued a while back, and I looked at my DW and said "this tastes like Rome burning smells." It was really strange! As soon as I put it in my mouth, I was there in SSE looking at Rome burning. Cool!

Since our sense of smell is our strongest memory cue, that would explain why I feel nostalgic whenever I smell the rides. I love how Disney caters to all of our senses.

I had to go with other because of POTC. Sometimes when I walk in my basement it reminds me of the musty smell of the Pirates ride.....I love it!

the oranges from horizons was the best.

07-16-2007, 01:24 AM
I voted for SSE, but Soarin' is a close second. It's just that I smell oranges more often in every day life; more so than the smell of burning ash.
Good poll question.

GhostHost999

For me I still think smelling the oranges in Horizons will be the most distinctive smell on an attraction.

After camping this weekend I have to say Spaceship Earth. While sitting Around the fire my wife said "it smells like that Epcot ride when they enter the dark ages." three people who are not big Disney fans but have been to the parks all agreed and knew exactly what she meant.

Other than that I have to say POTC and the HM have distinct odos too.

Gottaluvgoof
07-16-2007, 10:05 AM
I have to say the odor on the Stitch ride. UGH! I have only been on that ride once, and I can't get myself to go back on it. That actually nauseated me. Every time I go back, I think of going on there and seeing if it was just the way I felt that day or something, but I CANNOT bring myself to get back on that ride because of the horrible odor. :ill:

Gottaluvgoof
07-16-2007, 10:07 AM
I forgot the positive scents, I was so distressed talking about the Stitch ride. :mickey: I would have to agree with Philharmagic and Soarin. I love those scents.

For me it is the Universe of Energy. The first time we went on it someone in the group said it smelled like his gym locker, and everyone in the ride car started laughing. So now everytime I go on the ride all I can think about is it smelling like an old school gym locker.

I voted other for POTC the storm seen when the cool wind kicks up and that rain smell. The other day we were out on our boat :sail:We were on the edge of a semi bad storm and the feeling was exactly the smae, the smell, the cool wind from all directions. My DH though I was crazy b/c that was all I could talk about was how right on the ride is.

That would be me, which is why Rome burning is my most distinctive smell. Honestly, I have to hold my breathe when I go past it now. I still love that ride though!

My favorite smell would have to be the caves in POTC! I love how the smell and the cold air hits me when I first walk in and I know I’m about get on one of my most favorite rides at WDW. :mickey:

The most recognizable scent for me is HM's scent of dust and "old house" scent. I smell it whenever I turn on the A/C in my car for the first time that day; I love it! :cloud9:

i voted the rome burning scene bc it smells like a real fire nearly. i have one question though. would the monorail count as a recognizable smell?

DisneyDudet
07-19-2007, 03:29 AM
When I first read the thread title, I immediately thought MONORAIL! It does and always has had a very distinctive musty smell... like wet carpet. I remember that from my first trip when I was six. Also, the old Epcot rides, Horizons and World of Motion had carpet near the doors, and so when it rained.. the carpets created a musty smell. Now every time I go into an old department store or museum... I will smell that....

Soarin' has the best use of piped in smells. Very subtle. I love the pie in Philharmgic.
I HATE the fake smoke smells on Stitch and Dinosaur.

Rome burning! hands down.

I also remember the "old sock" smell in the monorail.

I have 4 "other" smells...
1. The monorail ventilation smell
2. POTC queue area

4. A distinct odor on the MK railroad. Can't really identify it, but it's always there!!

Something about the smell of water on Splash or, really, any of the boat rides does it for me. Sometimes after it rains and I'm driving with the window open, I can close my eyes and imagine I am going down a hill on Splash...and then oncoming traffic honks the horn moments before impact. ;)

I agree with you as well, but I love the smell of the Contemporary, everytime I step into a mall or somewhere that has a closed in atmosphere with foods of more than one kind I am in WDW (did that make sense?), But rides...Ya SE and POTC!.

I wish that my hospital reminded me of ANYTHING at Disneyworld. (beyond my inherited CM Donald Duck Lanyard that is.)

My smell is from Pirates of the Carribean. The one at Disnelyland more especially since that one was the one I grew up with, and when I worked in Anaheim, when the wind would blow just right you could smell it. That little mildewy, chlorine-y, water additve that they must use. The one at WDW is a little different, but I can still sniff at the gates and if the wind is just right, I can detect POC and my heart rate doubles! :cloud9:

I have to say that one of my most favorite smells is the speedway in Tomorrowland. I went on it a lot when I was 11, 12, 13 - that age - and thought it was so fun to drive. That gasoline smell. Everytime I go through a toll plaza or some enclosed car area, I can smell it. (Now I'm terrified of it because my sister, father and boyfriend all insist on slamming their cars into me, or stopping right in front of me. eek!)
Obviously, Rome burning. Someone else mentioned food - sometimes I smell food that will remind me of the Electric Umbrella or the ABC Commissary. Ah, only 25 days away...:fworks:

the entrance que of any ride all smell the same to me, even on the monorail. they all have an odd aroma of gasoline mixed with the sounds of vehicles pulling up. i was in DC for the past 3 weeks and every time i would enter the Metro que it would always remind me of bording a disney ride.

its eather that or when the champagne bottles pop in phillharmagic, whichever one sticks with me more, the answer is other.

:mickey: The damp, Pirate-y scent of Pirates of the Caribbean is unmistakeable!

The Bar-B-Que rib aroma in AK at Flame-Tree really gets our kids going. Every once in awhile they catch that scent somewhere else, and then cry DISNEY!!!

But the one that grabs me the most is the scent of the resort at POR. It was our very first distinct WDW exposure; the grassy, mulchy, piney woods scent mixed with the Sassagoula River and the smoky scent from the restaurants. VERY distinctive, and it beguiles every time we visit. !!SIGH!!
