So, when in January do the crowds dwindle down after New Years?

25 more days!

They start to dwindle after Jan 1, but they go down really fast after the first weekend, which is the marathon weekend.

According to info central, Marathon weekend is January 10th - 13th. The following weekend is the National Collegiate Cheerleading Competition, and also Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
We're trying to plan a trip in January as well - and trying to guess which will be the less crowded of the two weekends!

You definitely want to avoid MLK weekend, but the cheerleaders (and the marathoners) don't have much of an impact on the parks. At the resorts, maybe, but not the parks. Don't worry about it. Anytime in January is fine.

We were at WDW the week of the marathon in 2001. Not sure what week that was. It had to be fairly early in the month because some of the Christmas decor was still up. Anyhow, we thought the crowds were great! Very minimal waits.

We went from the 8th - 15th this past January - right after the marathon. It wasn't crowded during the week and we got on all rides without waiting, but on Saturday and Sunday, things changed. Posted ride waits were about 20-30 min., but this was only true towards the middle of the day (11-5). Morning and evenings were fine. We did fastpass for everything (like the promo video guy says "Fastpass- Do It!").
We can't stand crowds since we're from the NYC area and wanted a relaxing, easy vacation, so we were irritated about Sat&Sun. But, I think most people don't mind.

Well, Saturdays and Sundays are typically busier anyway, but the 14th and 15th of January of this year were part of Martin Luther King, Jr weekend.
