May 17, 1998 - Viking Ship Kids Area opened at the Norway Pavilion.
May 17, 1998 – The Wonderful World of Disney aired the TV movie “Miracle at Midnight.”
May 17, 2002 – The 2001-2002 Daytime Emmy Awards were presented at N.Y.C.’s Madison Square Garden. Disney Channel’s “Madeline” won for Outstanding Children’s Animated Program and Disney’s “Teacher’s Pet” took home an award for Outstanding Special Class Clidren’s Animated Program.
May 17, 2002 – The Lizzie McGuire episode “The Longest Yard” aired on the Disney Channel.
May 17, 2004 – The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Disney theme park ride Jungle Cruise would be turned into a live-action feature film.
May 17, 2004 – Comedic actor Tony Randall, who hosted the 1987 television special Walt Disney World Celebrity Circus, passed away in his sleep of complications from heart surgery. (TV fans would remember Randall for his role as Felix Unger on The Odd Couple.)
May 17, 2004 – Phase 1 of Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa (The 5th Disney Vacation Club built in WDW) opened. Jodi Benson (best known as the voice of Aerial in “The Little Mermaid”) took part in the opening festivities singing “Part of Your World” and other Disney Classics.
May 17, 2005 – Walt Disney Records released “Best of the Muppets Featuring The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” TV movie. (This is the Muppets’ first major album release since the franchise was purchased by the Walt Disney Co. in 2004)
May 17, 2005 – It was announced on this day that Roy and Patricia Disney have pledged $10 million to Providence Joseph Foundation to build San Fernando Valley’s first and most comprehensive free-standing cancer center. In
recognition of their generosity and commitment, the California cancer facility, would be named “The Roy and Patricia Disney Cancer Center.”
May 17, 2005 – Actor and impressionist Frank Gorshin passed away at age 72 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in California. He played the role of “Iggy the bank-robber” in Disney’s 1965 live-action film “That Darn Cat!” TV fans will remember him as the Riddler in the 1960’s Batman series.
