May 12, 1967 – Florida’s Governor signed legislation enabling Walt Disney Productions operation of WDW. Thus the Reedy Creek Improvement District was created. Out of this district, two cities Lake Buena Vista and Bay Lake were established. Now Florida taxpayers will not have to spend public money on Disney construction, and the Disney Company would not have to rely on state agencies for approval on anything built. (Because Walt has so many plans for Disney World, the company decided to build it in phases. Phase One would consist of a theme park, two resort hotels called the “Tempo Bay Resort Hotel” and the “Polynesian Village Resort,” and a campground. The theme park would be a larger version of the Disneyland Park. The park and the two hotels would be situated around a large man made lagoon.)
May 12, 1989 – The Disney Channel aired episode 15 of MMC. “Today is Hall of Fame Day!”
May 12, 1993 – Walter Elias Disney was inducted into the Hall of Famous Missourians.
May 12, 1994 – It was reported that David McCullough, president of the Society of American Historians, began a campaign to prevent the Walt Disney Co. from building a Civil War theme park near Manassas Battlefield in Virginia. McCullough announced the creation of Project Historic America, a group of 30 historians and writers that would try to persuade Disney to go elsewhere.
May 12, 1995 – The Disney/Hollywood Pictures Film “Crimson Tide” was released.
May 12, 2000 – The “Fantasyland Theater,” sponsored by Nestle, opened at Disneyland.
May 12, 2001 – Some WDW’S chef’s from “Victoria & Alberts,” the Contemporary Resort, and the Grand Floridian, took part in the event called “Folktales & Fairytales” at the Mennello Museum of American Folk Art. The event benefits the Orlando Opera, the Winter Park Public Library and the Mennello Museum.
May 12, 2002 – “Dinotopia,” a six-hour mini-series from Hallmark Entertainment aired on The Wonderful World of Disney.
May 12, 2005 – Members of the Board of Governors of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society gathered in Disneyland to congratulate fellow Society Governor (and Disney Legend) Ollie Johnson for receiving the “Walter E. Disney Railroad Preservation Award,” the highest honor given by the Society.
