While riding Splash Mountain last week, I was so sick :ack: to see all of the used chewing gum people stuck on the rocks at the start of the ride. Why do people feel they need desecrate such a nice place? What joy is there in it?! I am glad my DD’s really didn’t notice. I would hate  to have to explain why someone would do this.

Sorry, I just had to vent! :mickey:

Yes I agree. Gross. But I have to say, of all the theme parks I've been to: Canada's Wonderland, La Ronde, Darien Lake, whatever...
Disney is the cleanest I have ever seen, by a LONGSHOT!! Even the bathrooms are comparatively clean. This is unheard of in other parts of the world. (I've never been to Universal, but they may be clean, too, out of competition with Disney).

But either way, a HUGE thank you goes out to any CMs that are on the cleaning crew. Probably the least fun of the jobs at WDW but please know that you are a huge part of why WDW feels like home and is such a beautiful environment to take our children to. Thanks!!!

It's awful to see this at WDW. It feels like a personal affront, as if someone did it in your house. Kudos to the CMs who keep it nice. Thanks, CMs!

Yes, I noticed that last August (which I posted here on Intercot as well ;) ). I don't understand why people would do such a thing.

I dislike seeing seeing things like that too. I also am appalled at the trash left after shows such as Fantasmic! Doesn't anyone know how to clean up after themselves?? Maybe they didn't get the memo on the new invention called a trash can!

I see gum on the "rocks" at SM consistantly at DLR. They're an answer for people like that: these people are digusting, rude, people who believes that the rules don't apply them. Plus, these people have such low standards of themselves they believe that everything they come across should have low standards as well.

Universal is by no means nearly as clean as WDW. It was one of the things that we noticed. And the employees are much harder to find, as with the garbage cans.

WDW is by far the cleanest place I have ever been.

YUCK!!! I didn't notice it back in 2002 which was the last time we were there. This is very nasty and rude. I try to teach my kids not to litter. So far they listen except for the own rooms! :funny:

I do agree that WDW is the most cleanest park I have ever been too. When you consider the amount of people in them every day it is simply amazing how well they clean.

I saw someone do that at Disneyland when I was there in 2005. I was sitting behind him thinking of all the things I could say, but my wife kept me from saying anything. So I kept my mouth shut until I got off the ride; I then finger-said the kid to a CM who called someone else. I followed the kid until someone met up with him. He denied it when they confronted him, but I was there with my family to point out his lie. The CM then said, "Your day's through here," and they escorted him away. Hopefully, out of the park.

When it comes to Disney, don't mess with me.:skull:

Not Disney, but at the showing of Spider-Man 3 this weekend whilst leaving heard a man tell his woman (who was gathering up the trays of popcorn/drinks/candy residue of their party):

"Don't do that! They have people to do that!"

All too common a belief, I think.

A truely nasty habit. It's even worse when they just spit out in the middle of a walkway. I've had to scrape gum off my shoes a couple of times at WDW.

BTW, have any of you noticed that gum isn't sold in any of the parks? Must be a reason for that....:thedolls:

Didn't I read something... Years ago probably 20 years or so that there no gum sold anywhere at Disney?? or maybe it's just the Magic Kingdom??

You are right they don't sell gum at any of the parks or the resorts...it is an effort to keep gum off people's shoes and where it should not be...and most of the time chewing gum is a nasty habit.

I think it boils down to the fact that some people have no "home training" to teach them right from wrong. I still, at 33, get a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach when I see someone litter or act like that. My mom and dad instilled in me that it was wrong NO MATTER WHAT!! to litter. Thanks, parents!:number1:

I also get that gut feeling when I see someone else litter. Sometimes I stop and pick up what was dropped or I say something (which my husband sometimes wishes I wouldn't). I know that that would shock anyone in my family but I get outspoken when I see someone doing something that I was always taught was wrong, including sticking your chewing gum anywhere but in a trask can!:ack:

I do this too. I often will say to the person (in a very friendly voice, as if I am doing them a favor), "Excuse me, you dropped something." Most of the time, because I act like I really didn't know they were littering and think they dropped it accidentally they take it back and throw it away.

Of course, sometimes not - like the woman I watched tell her daughter to throw an entire fast food meal, bag, napkins and drink in the middle of the sidewalk. It infuriates me.

That's a shame! If you go to Kings Dominion in VA or Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, the gum thing is a HUGE problem...to the point that in the Volcano queue at Kings Dominion, the ENTIRE CAVE IS COVERED IN GUM....people stop at the entrance until the queue is gone completely through, then run through that part of it. It's the nastiest thing I've ever seen.

And now it's happening at WDW. I bet we didn't notice it before because they had more cleaning staff...but with the hard times in hiring right now...oh well. I say, if you see it, report them. Or stick your gum in their hair...sorry...don't do that...as much as you may want to. And if you do, I didn't tell you to do it.

Why Do They?????

Because it "COOL" to be disrespectful. It's "COOL" to be a rebel. It's "COOL" to be destructive. It "COOL" to appear to not give a darn.

And where is it learned, where is it tolerated, typically by parents.

But that's just my opinion.

I hate this, too.

In fact, it was funny. As we were walking through MK the day we had the tour guide with us, I kept bending over and picking up trash. The CM with us was impressed, but I said to him you know Disney works so hard to keep it clean that I feel guilty walking by trash like that. I feel like it's my responsibility to help clean up, too.

Later on, after we watched the daytime parade, as the crowds got up and started to clear out there was just trash everywhere. We just looked at each other like

Do these people just get up in their living rooms at home and throw their trash on the floor???

And where is it learned, where is it tolerated, typically by parents.I agree with you ... the people I saw standing up after the parade and leaving their trash all over were the kids AND the parents.

Nice lesson you're teaching them Mom and Dad. The world is your trash can.

I wonder how many of them are the same people who celebrate Earth Day and trumpet the need to be environmentally friendly?

Probably all of them. I will never forget living in Richmond VA, working for a Radio station that was hosting an Earth Day event on Strawberry Hill. When the crowds left, you couldn't see any grass for all the bottles and wrappers left on the ground.

Anyway, back on topic, I don't know that it's an "epidemic" necessarily...of the 30,000 people in MK that day, it only takes 50 - 100 to really trash the place.

But it still stinks.

It's not like Disney World is low on trash cans. It takes not even a minute to walk over to one and disgard your gum. I don't chew it to begin with since my TMJ is pretty bad, and the sight of chewed gum makes me gag!
