I just read on a site affiliated with the The Unofficial Guide, that Disney MGM's Voyage of the Little Mermaid will be closing for good in 2007. It attributes this to the fact that the Broadway musical version of the Little Mermaid is due out in 2007 (it says that "Tarzan Rocks" closed due to this reason - theatrical saw this show as competition for the Broadway show).

Is this happening? Has this already happened? We have not seen The Voyage of the Little Mermaid and were planning on seeing it on our trip this year in late Nov.

A) I hope they are wrong

and

B) This would not be a reason to close it as The Lion King show is still running at AK and good thing too! :number1:

I think this rumor is fueled by the fact that Tarzan Rocks closed when the Broadway version of Tarzan was announced.

I'm not sure if there is any credibility to the rumor, however, VotLM is running a little long in the tooth. It just went under a rehab, so I'm leaning towards no, but you never know. MGM is a 1/2 day park anyway, so closing something like that would only make things worse.

The only reason Mermaid would leave the park is because it is no longer popular and is being replaced with something new.. Not because Mermaid is going on broadway... Beauty and the Beast ran in MGM and on Broadway at the same time..

I agree, If it closed I doubt it would be simply because of the Broadway show. I mean how does a 20 min show in Orlando "compete" with a Broadway production in New York???? And I think Tarzan closing was just a coincidence... they wanted to renovate the theater and decided to put a new show in. As has been already stated, Lion King and Beauty and the Beast both had stage shows in Orlando at the same time as Broadway shows.

I wouldn't mind if they closed it though. I LOVE Mermaid, but I always found this show a bit lacking. I think they can do something better to represent the movie.

It was my understanding that insurance costs did in Tarzan Rocks. It was costing Disney too much to insure the performers since it was consider high risk for injuries for them as well as the audience members. It had nothing to do with the Broadway show.

This is an older rumor...and has been around since word got out that The Little Mermaid was heading to Broadway.

A friend of mine was a Disney Dancer in the Tarzan Rocks show. She said that the reason it closed was twofold: (1) The number of CMs required to put on the Tarzan Rocks show was high & (2) There would be noise intrusion between Tarzan Rocks & EE once it opened. Obviously, I can't confirm/deny either, but these were the two reasons that she gave.

IMHO, the Little Mermaid still is a good draw to that corner of MGM.

Both make sense, since they closed in the theater (contain the noise) I'd buy that one. Maybe it was costs that helped too. I know they used to have to just about force people into the theater in the end. Annoyed me that they would station a CM in Dinoland telling me how great the show was, etc.

I saw it twice, that's once too many. The second time I tried to convince the rest of my party they were wasting their time. We left less than 1/2 way into the show.

I like VotLM, but I think they could do better. If they closed it to replace it with another LM attraction that was an upgrade (like the dark ride this movie deserves) I'd be okay with that.

I dont believe it. I think it draws in too many little ones to that park.
