Apr. 13, 1935 – The Walt Disney Mickey Mouse cartoon “Mickey’s Kangaroo”, and was the last black & white cartoon produced was released.
Apr. 13, 1943 – Original Mouseketeer Doreen Tracey, from “The Mickey Mouse Club”, was born in London, England.
Apr. 13, 1954 – Disney artist Glen Keane, known for his work on “Pocahontas”, “Aladdin”, and “Tarzan”, was born in Arbington, Pa.
Apr. 13, 1965 – Walt Disney, his brother Roy, and other Disney executives visited the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Walt had become friendly with Wernher von Braun, the director of the center and technical advisor on three space-related TV films that Disney produced in the 1950’s. (Wernher would go on to help NASA make the first moon landing a reality.) On the front page of the Huntsville Times was the headline:
“Walt Disney Makes Pledges to Aid Space.”
Apr. 13, 1980 – The Disney TV show aired “Disney Oscar Winners.”
Apr. 13, 1986 – Disney’s 2-hour TV movie “A Fighting Choice” aired.
Apr. 13, 2002 – Lucky WDW fans got an opportunity to see Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama! The newest area of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The guest’s had access to the parks newest attractions, TriceraTop Spin, Primeval Whirl, and Tarzan Rocks, as well as a private dinner in Dinoland U.S.A. the special 3 hour event cost $125 per person.
Apr. 13, 2002 – Soap opera fans got to meet their favorite stars from “One Live to Live” at Disney’s California Adventure.
Apr. 13, 2004 – A tribute concert for composer Henry Mancini was held at the new Walt Disney Concert Hall. Hosting the celebration were Julie Andrews (of Disney’s Mary Poppins) and Senator John Glenn. (The late Henry Mancini wrote the music for Disney’s 1986 animated feature “The Great Mouse Detective.”)
Apr. 13, 2004 – Animator Floyd Norman discussed his life in the animation industry through satirical sketches created during his illustrious career at Walt Disney Studio (as well as Hanna-Barbara, Pixar and Cartoon Network) at the Glendale Public Library in California. He also promoted his new book Son of Faster Cheaper, a humorous look at the cartoon business.
